The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) is putting the management of the Formentor lighthouse café out to tender

The Board of Directors of the Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) passed a resolution, in its last meeting held yesterday in Palma, to approve the specifications and clauses that will govern the public tender for the management, under concession, of several spaces in the vicinity of the Formentor lighthouse, in the municipality of Pollença, to be used as a bar, café and restaurant.

The tender will allow the operation of the facilities linked to the café and restaurant located next to the lighthouse, including several spaces of the main building and other attached premises. The future concession holder will be able to manage the establishment for a maximum period of ten years.

The Formentor lighthouse café has been open to the public since 1995 and has established itself for decades as one of Mallorca's most iconic tourist attractions, for both residents and tourists. Its superb location, with its extraordinary scenic and environmental value, makes it a unique space that forms part of the experience of visitors to the Formentor peninsula.

With this call, the APB seeks to guarantee the continuity of the restoration activity in the lighthouse through an open procedure that allows the selection of the proposal that offers the best conditions for managing the space.

The activity has continued in recent years thanks to a temporary permit granted through a public tender by the Board of Directors of the Port Authority in 2022. Now, the APB is taking a step further by calling for a longer-term concession, which will bring stability to the operation of this landmark establishment for residents and visitors.

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) inaugurates the new Palma Port Centre, a space to bring the port closer to the public

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) today inaugurated the new Palma Port Centre, a space designed to bring the reality of the Balearic Islands' ports of general interest closer to the public, their daily activity, their economic and social impact, as well as the future challenges related to sustainability, innovation and port-city integration. With its launch, the Palma Port Centre becomes the second Port Centre in Spain to join the international network of the International Association of Cities and Ports (AIVP), a leading global organisation promoting sustainable relationships between ports and cities.

Located in the port of Palma, the new facility is established as a meeting point, dialogue and dissemination centre open to residents, visitors, educational institutions and social groups. The project is in line with the APB's commitment to strengthen the relationship between the port and society, facilitating knowledge of an essential element of infrastructure for the connectivity and supply of the islands.

The Port Centre offers an immersive and educational experience that allows you to discover how the ports managed by the APB work, the services they provide, the trades that make their activity possible and the strategic role they play in the economic and social development of the Balearic Islands. It also highlights the sustainability policies, corporate social responsibility and environmental commitment promoted by the port authority.

The building is structured into different spaces designed to combine outreach, cultural activity and citizen participation. On the ground floor there is a large multifunctional hall, conceived as a versatile space capable of adapting to temporary exhibitions, receptions, presentations and public events.

The same floor houses an educational and mediation space aimed especially at schoolchildren and families, equipped with interactive resources to learn about the ports of the Balearic Islands, the lighthouses managed by the APB, the environmental challenges and the new technologies applied to port management. Learning experiences related to educational robotics stand out among the activities that can be conducted.

The Port Centre also has an audiovisual room designed as a small cinema space for the screening of documentaries, in-house productions, thematic series and content related to maritime and port activity.

On the first floor is the new institutional auditorium, with a capacity for 180 people, equipped with professional audiovisual technology and prepared to host conferences, technical seminars, presentations and institutional events.

The second floor houses the Port Centre interpretation centre, conceived as the knowledge hub. Through audiovisual resources, interactive elements, models, historical objects and immersive spaces, the tour explains how the port of Palma has evolved, the function of the five ports managed by the APB, civilian vessel and naval repair activity, passenger and freight traffic, the historical relationship of the islands with the sea and the work of the thousands of people who make up the port ecosystem.

The permanent exhibition also invites reflection on the main future challenges of the Balearic ports through participatory experiences that allow visitors to learn about the uniqueness of Palma, Alcúdia, Mahón, Ibiza and La Savina, as well as the sustainability, innovation and social return projects promoted by the APB.

The Port Centre now begins its activity as a facility open to all citizens. The building is open to visitors from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

"Women lighthouse keepers: the light that guides us"

Coinciding with the opening of the Port Centre, the multifunctional hall unveils the temporary exhibition Women lighthouse keepers: the light that guides us, a proposal curated by Cristina Rodríguez Paz that explores the world of lighthouses and recovers the memory of the women who lived in them and cared for them throughout history.

The exhibition focuses on the female perspective linked to these maritime signals. Through historiographical materials and contemporary works of art —illustration, collage, assemblage, oil painting and photography—, the exhibition establishes a dialogue between historical documentation and contemporary artistic creation.

The project features the stories of the six women who worked professionally as lighthouse keepers in Spain, as well as those of twenty others who succeeded in being appointed to the post and those of numerous pioneering women who took on the role replacing fathers or husbands. It also pays tribute to the many anonymous women who sustained daily life in lighthouses through caregiving, maintenance, and companionship.

With this first exhibition, the Port Centre begins a cultural programme aimed at generating new perspectives on the sea, maritime and port heritage, and the close relationship that has historically bonded Balearic society with its coastline.

The Palma Port Centre brings together the leading figures in the Spanish boating and sailing sector with the celebration of the 20th Symposium on Marinas

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) and Maritime Actions and Services (ASMAR) have today inaugurated the 20th Symposium on Marinas at the Palma Port Centre, the main national forum for reflection and debate on marina facilities in Spain. The meeting brings together institutional representatives, port authorities, legal experts, marina operators and companies in the boating and sailing sector for two days to analyse the main challenges and opportunities of this strategic activity for the blue economy and marine tourism.

The opening ceremony was attended by the president of the Spanish State Ports Authority, Gustavo Santana Hernández, along with the Secretary General of Air and Maritime Transport, Benito Núñez Quintanilla; the Minister of the Sea and Water Cycle of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Juan Manuel Lafuente; as well as representatives of various port authorities and government agencies linked to the maritime and port sector.

With the slogan "The past guides us, the future drives us", this twentieth edition also coincides with the 40th anniversary of a congress that, since its creation in 1989, has established itself as the main space for the exchange of knowledge and strategic analysis of the marina and sailing club sector in Spain.

During the institutional opening, the president of the Balearic Islands Port Authority, Javier Sanz, highlighted the strategic role that marinas play today within the Spanish port system. “Marinas can no longer be understood solely as elements of infrastructure linked to leisure or tourism. "They are spaces of economic activity, innovation, sustainability, urban integration and community cohesion," he noted.

Sanz also defended the need to move towards management models based on collaboration and the modernisation of port infrastructure. “The great challenges we face demand dialogue, cooperation and a shared vision,” he stated, calling for “modern and responsible management of the port’s public domain.”

The president of the APB also highlighted the value of the Port Centre as a meeting forum between the port and the citizens. “This Port Centre symbolises the desire to bring the port closer to the public, to turn it into a space for knowledge, dialogue and dissemination, and to strengthen the link between port activity and the society it serves,” he emphasised.

For his part, Víctor Moreno, CEO and founding partner of ASMAR and director of the Symposium, pointed out that this twentieth edition “reflects the consolidation of an essential forum to share experiences, forge alliances and anticipate the challenges that will determine the future of marinas in Spain.”

Moreno also expressed his gratitude for the involvement of the Balearic Islands Port Authority and for Palma hosting this national meeting at a time of transformation for the sector. In this regard, he highlighted the role of the Balearic Islands as an international model for recreational boating and the APB's commitment to sustainability, innovation and port-city integration.

The Symposium’s programme will address issues such as environmental sustainability, digitalisation, new concession models, coastal protection, the port-city relationship, and the competitiveness of Spanish marinas in the international sphere over two days, through presentations and round tables with experts, institutional leaders, and professionals from the maritime-port sector.
