The APB supports renewing the agreement for a more sustainable cruise ship model in Palma

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) endorses a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Government of the Balearic Islands, Palma City Council and the main companies in the cruise sector, which builds on the existing institutional and sectoral collaboration framework to ensure the balanced and sustainable development of this activity in the port of Palma.

The agreement represents the continuation and updating of the commitment signed in 2022, a milestone that positioned the Balearic Islands as a benchmark in the responsible regulation of cruise traffic in the Mediterranean. The renewal of the agreement reaffirms the measures adopted at that time, aimed at organising port calls, optimising port planning and reducing the impact of activity on the city and its surroundings.

In this context, the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, which manages the port system of general interest in the autonomous community, plays an essential role in the implementation, coordination and monitoring of the commitments established. The APB works together with the Balearic Government, Palma City Council and the signatory companies in the planning of port calls and port operations, ensuring compliance with the agreed criteria and facilitating efficient, transparent management in line with the principles of sustainability.

Through this renewal of the agreement, the APB further demonstrates its commitment to promoting a responsible management model that balances the economic activity associated with cruise tourism with environmental protection, quality of life for citizens, and the sustainable development of the Port of Palma.

La Lonja Marina Chárter will manage the rental moorings on the seafront promenade of the port of Palma

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) met yesterday and agreed to select the proposal submitted by La Lonja Marina Chárter as the most advantageous bid in the public tender for the management and operation of moorings for rental boats on the seafront promenade of the port of Palma, under an administrative concession.

The concession will last for 16 years and involves a committed investment of over €4.5 million.

It covers a total area of 17,915 square metres of public port land, of which 17,100 square metres correspond to water surface area, and includes mooring berths and a fuel supply facility for rental boats.

La Lonja Marina Chárter's bid was particularly highly rated for the environmental improvements it incorporates, in line with the APB's commitment to sustainability and protection of the port environment.

The actions planned to boost marine biodiversity include installing mooring systems that help regenerate the seabed and using Econcrete technology, designed to encourage marine life to grow on port infrastructure.

Water management measures include a custom-built drinking water production system, rainwater reuse for cleaning and flushing, and the installation of consumption control systems to detect potential leaks and improve efficiency. Smart planters are also planned, which significantly reduce water consumption.

To reduce energy consumption, La Lonja Marina Chárter plans to install solar panels, which will generate some of the electricity needed for its operations. In addition, the project includes an electric charging infrastructure with several points for electric boats, as well as a charging point for electric bicycles and scooters, promoting more sustainable mobility in the port area.

This announcement marks a step forward for the APB in its goal of improving port services and promoting a more efficient and environmentally friendly management model in the port of Palma.

Call for tenders announced to manage the former Marítimo bar in Plaza Santo Domingo de la Calzada

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) agreed at its last meeting yesterday to launch a public tender to operate a bar-café-restaurant located in Plaza Santo Domingo de la Calzada, within the port of Palma.

The establishment, formerly known as Bar Marítimo, is situated in the Santo Domingo gardens, part of the heritage area of Palma's port and at the foot of the Es Jonquet neighbourhood, which has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest. The concession includes an outdoor terrace on the first floor of the building, as well as an open-air terrace in front of the main façade, which enhances its appeal and functionality.

This is an iconic location in the port, with high foot traffic and a strategic position that favours its connection with both port users and residents and visitors to the city. Once in service, it will strengthen the port's service offering and boost the social and economic vitality of this area, in line with the APB's strategy of promoting port-city integration.

It will have a maximum duration of 12 years and covers the operation of facilities intended for use as a bar, café and restaurant, as well as the possibility of offering complementary services related to hospitality and catering.

This initiative is part of the APB's ongoing efforts to improve the quality of port services, promote the integration of the port with the city and create new spaces that boost economic and tourist activity in the port area.
