Brine-fed electrolytic reefs

Port innovation and marine sustainability are making progress thanks to initiatives promoted or supported by the Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB), which acts as a catalyst for new technological solutions in the maritime and port spheres. Among the outstanding projects is the proposal Brine-fed electrolytic reefs, developed by Irp engineering and the University of Alicante and a finalist in the Timón Awards, in which the APB is a partner.

This innovative solution turns waste brine from desalination plants into an opportunity for ecological regeneration. Its technology allows reefs to be "grown" through electrolysis processes on light metal mesh placed at discharge points, exploiting the high ionic concentration of the brine to accelerate the formation of a calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate coating‑. The result is a structure with a texture and porosity similar to that of a natural rocky substrate, suitable for the colonisation of filter-feeding benthic communities.

Once the desired thickness and roughness conditions are achieved, these modules are installed in marinas and ports as green infrastructure, contributing to increasing biodiversity and improving the quality of the port ecosystem. In addition, the proposal incorporates an underwater observatory suspended from fixed or floating pontoons, with glass floor sections that enable direct observation of the reef and its development, together with salinity, pH, turbidity and temperature sensors. Its integration of educational and environmental communication components reinforces the link between the port and the general public.

The project exemplifies the type of applied and sustainability-oriented innovation that the APB seeks to promote: solutions that not only mitigate impacts, but also generate environmental, social and informative value in the Balearic Islands port environment.

The port of Palma celebrates the First Swim of the Year with a popular event and another competitive charity event

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) is organising for the first time on the 1st of January, starting at 12.00 noon, the First Swim of the Year, an activity with which the port of Palma will ring in the New Year by the sea and open to the public. The event will be held at the end of Can Pere Antoni Beach, facing Marina des Portitxol square, and will combine sport, participation of the general public and charity.

People can participate in the First Swim of the Year in two ways. On the one hand, there will be a race over an approximate distance of 200 metres, open to all those who wish to participate. This activity is free of charge, although prior registration is required to ensure the organisation and safety of the activity.

On the other hand, there will be a competitive race, with a 400-metre course, intended for swimmers who want to kick off the year with a sporting challenge. There is registration fee of 5 euros for the competitive race, which will go entirely to the SOS Mamás association. Participants can register for both races through the Elitechip platform, where you can also find all the technical information about the event.

The charitable nature of the day will be enhanced with a serving of hot chocolate, which will take place after the end of the races, fostering a festive and convivial atmosphere among participants and companions.

After the First Swim of the Year, part of the Christmas festivities Nadal al port de Palma, the Christmas programme will continue on 3rd January at the Port Centre with a Christmas eco-workshop making candle holders from recycled material, as well as another screening of children's cinema, with the film The Wild Robot. The programme will conclude on 5 January with one of the most eagerly awaited moments for the little ones: the Three Wise Men's Parade, who will arrive at the port of Palma by boat to begin their tour of the city.

With these activities, the APB consolidates the port of Palma as a space for meeting, celebration and participation of the general public during the Christmas holidays.

Coliving Puig de Alaró to manage the restaurant at the Lonja pier in the port of Palma

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) has selected the proposal submitted by the company Coliving Puig de Alaró, following the corresponding public tender procedure, to manage the bar-cafeteria-restaurant located on the Lonja quay in the port of Palma. Its proposal has been assessed as the most advantageous, in accordance with the technical, economic and quality criteria established in the tender specifications.

The concession, with a duration of 16 years, includes a committed investment by Coliving Puig de Alaró for a total amount of €2,900,000. This investment will be used to build a basement and reconstruct the existing building, using sustainable and locally sourced materials, and to install a photovoltaic system to harness renewable energy in the restaurant facilities, thus reinforcing the sustainability and energy efficiency objectives promoted by the APB.

The scope of the concession covers a total area of 732.90 m², of which 268.20 m² corresponds to existing buildings and 464.70 m² to outdoor terrace areas located within the public port domain. The management of the establishment will include the provision of bar, café and restaurant services, as well as other complementary activities related to the hospitality industry, as detailed in the basic project presented.

The APB thus continues with its objective of optimising the use of the public port domain and strengthening the provision of services that contribute to the economic development of the port area of Palma, in line with the criteria of environmental sustainability and operational efficiency established by the entity.

The formalisation of the administrative concession will take effect after the signing of the corresponding contract, once the stipulated administrative procedures have been completed.
