The Port of Palma switches on its Christmas lights together with the winning design from the children's competition ‘Del paper al cel’ (From paper to the sky).

The Port of Palma will switch on its new sustainable Christmas lights on Thursday, 27 November. This year's lighting will feature the most voted design from the “Del paper al cel” competition organised by the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB). Marcos Gutiérrez, the child artist who created the winning drawing, will switch on the lights during the ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m. at Moll Vell, in front of the APB headquarters. The ceremony will include a musical performance by the Son Dameto choir and be rounded off with hot chocolate in support of SOS Mamás.

The APB is investing in efficient, environmentally friendly lighting based on low-energy technology and designed to blend into the port landscape. By transforming children's drawings into lighting elements, the project adds a participatory component that links the creativity of the youngest members of the community with the cultural life of the port.

Christmas in the Port of Palma

The lighting ceremony marks the start of the “Nadal al Port de Palma” (Christmas at the Port of Palma) calendar, which for the first time offers a Christmas event programme open to all citizens. After the lighting ceremony on 27 November, the activities will continue on 23 December at the Port Centre with a charity concert by the Son Dameto choir, accompanied by a new charity hot chocolate event. On 27 December, the same venue will host a Christmas eco-workshop and a children's film screening, both of which will be repeated on 3 January 2026. The year's traditional first swim will take place on 1 January in a festive atmosphere by the sea at Can Pere Antoni beach. Finally, on 5 January 2025, the port will host the Epiphany parade, which will bring the celebrations to a close.

This new programme sees the APB reinforce the Port of Palma's status as a leading cultural and social venue during the Christmas season, combining tradition, sustainability, solidarity and citizen participation.

Charity

The charity hot chocolate event and the lighting ceremony will help raise awareness around the efforts of S.O.S. Mamás Baleares, a non-profit organisation made up entirely of volunteers who support vulnerable families and individuals in Mallorca. The organisation has over 200 volunteers and provides food parcels, hot meals, clothing, children's items and essential baby products through its soup kitchens and distribution points. Its mission is to ensure that no family feels alone when they need help the most, and its daily activities are supported by donations and the involvement of the public.

Throughout December, the Port Centre will have a food collection point for this association. The hours will be Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., making it easy for anyone to contribute non-perishable goods and show their support.

The APB launches ‘Nadal al port de Palma’, an open-to-all Christmas calendar of events

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) has prepared the first edition of “Nadal al port de Palma” (Christmas in the Port of Palma) for the festive season, a Christmas programme open to the public that will fill the port with activities for children, charity and sports.

Events will begin on Thursday, 27 November at 7 p.m. with the official switching on of the port's Christmas lights. The winning design from the children's competition ‘Del paper al cel’ (From paper to sky) will be presented during the event, which will be converted into a light-up object. In fact, the child who created this design will switch on the lights. During the event to be held at Moll Vell, opposite the APB headquarters, there will be a musical performance by the Son Dameto Choir and a charity hot chocolate event in aid of the SOS Mamás association.

Following the switch-on, the event calendar will continue on 23 December at the Port Centre with a charity concert by the Son Dameto choir, accompanied by another charity hot chocolate event.

The programme also includes a charity food collection for the SOS Mamás organisation, inviting citizens to help families in need at this time of year. The hours will be Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Port Centre, making it easy for anyone to contribute non-perishable goods and show their support.

Furthermore, visitors can view the exhibition “A Stroll along the Seafront” at the Port Centre, which offers a historical overview of the evolution of the promenade from its origins to the present day. The exhibition explains how this road was created in response to a strategic need: to connect the Old quay with the recently built West dock and the new Paraires and Poniente quays, facilitating the port connection and the growth of the port of Palma. The exhibition devotes a prominent space to the latest major redevelopment, begun in 2022 and completed this year, which has profoundly transformed its physiognomy and urban function.

Successful participation in the 1st Charity Race of the APB held on the occasion of the public unveiling of New Promenade in Palma

Today, Sunday, the Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) held its 1st Charity Race, held on the occasion of the public unveiling of the New Promenade of Palma, with a successful turnout of over 2,100 registered participants, in an event that combined sport and solidarity. The start of the race was presided over by the president of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, the president of the APB, Javier Sanz, the president of Projecte Home Balears, Jesús Mullor and the director of the APB, Toni Ginard.

President Sanz was absolutely "delighted" by the turnout and very satisfied with the outcome of the event. "We have handed over the promenade to the citizens, as promised, and with an impressive degree of participation," he said. "We have made a promenade for people, and we have celebrated it with a charity run for those of all ages to take part," he added.

As for the president of Projecte Home Balears, Jesús Muller, he thanked the APB for being the beneficiary of this charity event, as well as "for bringing together sport and solidarity for a just cause, such as rehabilitation and prevention of young people in the area of addiction, which is the field of Projecte Home. It is a cause for celebration," he concluded.

The event featured a packed weekend of dance and physical exercise activities open to the public, as well as a fair of exhibitors linked to sport and health. Today, Sunday, the day started with the 10 km race, followed by the children's races and then the 4 km race and walk for the general public. During the long race, participants were able to run through a restricted area of the port, such as the Poniente quays, which were opened to the public for the occasion.

The activities concluded with the prize-giving ceremony and the presentation by the APB to Projecte Home Balears of a cheque for the total amount collected, which came to 10,538.40 euros.

How the races were run

The sports programme included non-competitive children's events with different routes for ages up to 14 years old, as well as a four-kilometre fun walk open to everyone. Martina Ramis was the little girl in charge of cutting the ribbon that started the final event, in which the citizens were able to walk along Palma’s brand new Promenade.

As for the sporting events, there were a four- and ten-kilometre races. Antoni Gran was the overall winner of the men's 10 km race, with a time of 32 minutes and 15 seconds, followed by Lluís Caldentey and José Luis Lobay, in second and third place respectively. In the women's category, Leonor Font won with a time of 36 minutes and 8 seconds, ahead of Francisca De Villalonga in second place and María José Medina in third.

In the 4 km race, Yoel Bastida was the winner in the men's category with a time of 13 minutes and 42 seconds, followed by Pau Garcia in second place and Pedro Olmo in third. In the women's race, Carolina Routier won with a time of 16 minutes and 12 seconds, followed by Lucia Monte and Sandra Moreno.

In addition, the three groups with the highest number of participants were recognised, a category designed to promote the participation of schools, sports clubs and associations. The Verge del Carme and Montision schools and the Malif Mallorca Trail sports club were the winners, receiving cheques for 500, 300 and 200 euros worth of sports equipment respectively.

Presentation to the public

The aim of the event was threefold: to involve citizens in the public unveiling of this new urban space on Palma's seafront promenade, to encourage physical activity in an emblematic setting in Palma, and to raise funds for a charitable cause. This initiative was the first of a series of initiative that will turn the new promenade into a permanent civic hub.

With this race, the APB completes the comprehensive transformation of the connection between the port and the city. The renovation of Palma's promenade has created a greener, more accessible and sustainable space, designed for public enjoyment and active mobility.

This APB project involved an investment of over €50 million and the transformation of 3.5 kilometres of seafront. The new promenade gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists, expands green areas and promotes sustainable mobility, reducing the prominence of road traffic.

Over the three years of construction, more than 2,300 new trees have been planted, 37,000 m² of landscaped areas have been created and large areas have been set aside for pedestrians, cyclists and recreational spaces. The project has incorporated sustainable drainage systems, smart LED lighting and charging points for electric vehicles.
