The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) brings forward the operation by one day and begins the manoeuvres to refloat the yacht sunk in the port of Ibiza

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) has brought forward the planned schedule by one day and started the manoeuvres today to refloat the yacht sunk at the entrance to the port of Ibiza. This operation allowed the vessel, which is currently located approximately ten metres below sea level, to be moved to the jetty of the Botafoc dock.

The operation, coordinated by the APB, thus enters a decisive phase. Tomorrow the yacht is scheduled to be lifted, that is, the manoeuvre to raise the vessel out of the water and place it on dry land. This action will allow the waste treatment tasks and de-ballasting work to begin later.

The president of the APB, Javier Sanz, and the director, Toni Ginard, travelled today to the Botafoc dock to follow the works on site, together with the Ibiza harbourmaster, Luis Gascón.

Operation carried out today

During the day, one vessel towed the wreck to the dock, while another followed the route with an absorbent barrier to collect any liquid and solid waste and debris.

Once in port, new perimeter containment barriers were deployed, consisting of a double absorbent and floating barrier system with the aim of ensuring maximum protection of the marine environment during the following phases of the operation.

Cleaning and contaminant removal tasks

Along with the refloating manoeuvres, specialist teams continue with the tasks of cleaning up the vessel. Since Monday, divers have extracted a total of 900 litres of polluting liquids from inside the yacht.

In addition, 900 kg of solid waste were removed in previous days. This amount is in addition to the work carried out today, in which three additional sacks, each weighing 250 kg, were extracted. In total, 1,650 kg of solid waste have been recovered, significantly reducing the risk of pollution.

All recovered waste will be transferred to an authorised treatment plant for proper disposal.

Once the lifting operation and the dry-docking of the vessel are completed, an investigation and technical assessment phase will begin, lasting approximately one week, with the aim of clarifying the causes of the incident.

The APB is keeping the entire control and monitoring system activated, with the aim of ensuring a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly operation, in a highly complex technical operation that continues to go ahead as planned.

New leadership and strategic investments to transform the ports of Ibiza and La Savina

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) has appointed a new delegate to oversee the ports of Ibiza and La Savina, as part of its strategy to strengthen port management and drive forward strategic projects at the ports of general interest in the Pitiüses.

The new delegate, Alberto del Pino Rivera, is a civil engineer specialising in roads, canals and ports, and has more than 25 years of experience in international port projects. Their incorporation, the result of a selection process through a public competition, responds to the APB's desire to provide these ports with a highly qualified technical profile, capable of leading the current challenges in terms of infrastructure, sustainability and port-city integration.

The new representative, who has a proven track record in the maritime infrastructure sector, takes on the challenge of establishing a modern and efficient management system, aimed at ensuring service quality and striking a balance between the various port activities, within an environment that is particularly demanding from both an operational and territorial perspective.

Investment plan

Alongside this organisational restructuring, the APB has drawn up an ambitious investment plan for the port of Ibiza, with a total budget of €104.31 million for the period 2026–2029. This initiative represents a firm commitment to modernising infrastructure, improving transport links and moving towards a more sustainable port model that is better integrated with the city.

Among the most significant initiatives is the development of the Ibosim seafront promenade, designed as a project that will transform the area and will involve public participation, as well as improvements to road access to the Botafoc area to reduce congestion. Work is also planned on the Botafoc breakwater and various quays, as well as the construction and upgrading of key infrastructure such as the dry dock, new car parks and the future Eivissa–la Savina ferry terminal.

The plan also includes measures aimed at environmental sustainability, such as the introduction of shore power systems to supply electricity to moored vessels and reduce emissions, as well as the modernisation of essential infrastructure such as the drinking water network. Overall, this is a package of actions structured into various projects with defined schedules and budgets, which will strengthen the operational capacity and quality of port services.

Another key focus is the promotion of water sports and recreational boating, with plans to put out to tender a long-term concession for the management of the facility for small and medium-sized vessels located at the Ribera-Poniente quay in the Port of Ibiza, known commercially as Port Nautic Ibiza. This initiative aims to promote disciplines such as sailing and canoeing, encourage educational and social activities, and consolidate the port as a benchmark for social responsibility within the sector.

The APB has also indicated that the development of some strategic investments remains conditional on the final approval of the Special Plan for the port of Ibiza, which is currently being processed. This instrument is key to unlocking essential projects and advancing the integration of the port with the urban environment.

Port traffic in Ibiza

In terms of activity, the port of Ibiza continues to play a central role in the island’s connectivity and supply chain, handling over 90% of all goods. In the cruise sector, the plan for 205 port calls in 2026 includes specific measures to manage passenger flows and ensure operations are compatible with regular traffic, thereby guaranteeing a satisfactory experience for both passengers and port staff.

With the appointment of the new port director and the roll-out of the investment plan, the APB is embarking on a new phase at the ports of Ibiza and La Savina, aimed at enhancing their efficiency, sustainability and service capacity, and at continuing to generate value for the whole of Ibiza and Formentera.

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) successfully begins fuel extraction from the shipwreck in the port of Ibiza and makes progress in the refloating plan

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) successfully commenced operations today, 14 April, to safely remove the hydrocarbons remaining in the sunken yacht, which lies at a depth of around 25 metres off the entrance to the port of Eivissa.

This operation, a priority within the operation, is especially complex due to the depth at which the vessel is located and the weather conditions, which affect both the diving work and the maritime operations. The APB monitors the progress of the work at all times, ensuring it is carried out correctly and minimising any risk to the marine environment.

The work that began today focuses on removing contaminants and cleaning the interior of the vessel, an essential step before moving on to the refloating phase.

Action plan and planned schedule

The operation began on April 11 with an initial inspection of the wreck using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), as well as the installation of containment barriers to prevent the dispersion of contaminants. Previously, the area had already been secured by placing a shipwreck buoy, properly marked, and absorbent barriers in the vicinity of the sinking.

On 12 and 13 April, work had to be suspended due to adverse weather conditions, which prevented both diving operations and safe navigation in the area.

Now that this incident has been resolved, the crucial phase of oil recovery and vessel cleaning began today, 14 April, and is currently underway.

Weather permitting, the installation of lifting bags is scheduled to take place between 15 and 16 April, as a preliminary step to the main operation. The salvage of the wreck and its subsequent towing to the Botafoc quay are scheduled for 17 April, whilst on 18 April the vessel will be hoisted out of the water, placed on dry dock and the relevant scrapping plan drawn up.

The remains will then be transported and deposited at the outer toe of the Botafoc breakwater, where they will be kept in safe custody. From 19 April until 26 April, the investigation and technical assessment of the incident will take place.

Since the start of the emergency, following the fire on 10 April, the APB has led all operations in Port Zone II, coordinating the various agencies involved and prioritising the safety of people (with no personal injuries) and the protection of the marine environment.

At present, the operational focus is on the safe removal of the fuel and on preparing for the complex refloating operations, which will depend on sea conditions over the coming days.

The Balearic Islands Port Authority has activated all control and monitoring mechanisms, reaffirming its commitment to efficient, safe and environmentally friendly port management.
