The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) brings forward the operation by one day and begins the manoeuvres to refloat the yacht sunk in the port of Ibiza

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) has brought forward the planned schedule by one day and started the manoeuvres today to refloat the yacht sunk at the entrance to the port of Ibiza. This operation allowed the vessel, which is currently located approximately ten metres below sea level, to be moved to the jetty of the Botafoc dock.

The operation, coordinated by the APB, thus enters a decisive phase. Tomorrow the yacht is scheduled to be lifted, that is, the manoeuvre to raise the vessel out of the water and place it on dry land. This action will allow the waste treatment tasks and de-ballasting work to begin later.

The president of the APB, Javier Sanz, and the director, Toni Ginard, travelled today to the Botafoc dock to follow the works on site, together with the Ibiza harbourmaster, Luis Gascón.

Operation carried out today

During the day, one vessel towed the wreck to the dock, while another followed the route with an absorbent barrier to collect any liquid and solid waste and debris.

Once in port, new perimeter containment barriers were deployed, consisting of a double absorbent and floating barrier system with the aim of ensuring maximum protection of the marine environment during the following phases of the operation.

Cleaning and contaminant removal tasks

Along with the refloating manoeuvres, specialist teams continue with the tasks of cleaning up the vessel. Since Monday, divers have extracted a total of 900 litres of polluting liquids from inside the yacht.

In addition, 900 kg of solid waste were removed in previous days. This amount is in addition to the work carried out today, in which three additional sacks, each weighing 250 kg, were extracted. In total, 1,650 kg of solid waste have been recovered, significantly reducing the risk of pollution.

All recovered waste will be transferred to an authorised treatment plant for proper disposal.

Once the lifting operation and the dry-docking of the vessel are completed, an investigation and technical assessment phase will begin, lasting approximately one week, with the aim of clarifying the causes of the incident.

The APB is keeping the entire control and monitoring system activated, with the aim of ensuring a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly operation, in a highly complex technical operation that continues to go ahead as planned.

The APB is coordinating the salvage of the burnt-out yacht and the clean-up of the waters in Zone II of the Port of Eivissa

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) continues to lead the emergency response following the fire on a yacht that occurred on 10 April at the entrance to the port of Eivissa, in Port Zone II, where it exercises its powers of coordination and response to such incidents.

Currently, the APB is actively directing the most relevant tasks of the recovery phase: the refloating of the wreck remains and the management of the waste generated in the affected area, in addition to the cleaning of the marine environment.

The incident took place around 7:40 p.m., when a column of smoke was detected at the mouth of the port. Port police officers and pilots from the Ibiza Pilots’ Association were the first to respond, managing to evacuate the six people on board the vessel, including crew and passengers, within a few minutes; they were then taken to safety.

While the rescue efforts were underway, the fire spread rapidly, causing serious damage to the vessel. At that moment, the APB activated the emergency protocols in the area of the waters of Zone II and assumed the direction of the operations, coordinating all the services involved.

Once the safety of people was ensured, the actions focused on controlling the incident and assessing possible environmental risks, especially in relation to potential spills and impacts on the marine environment. In the hours that followed, the APB deployed containment and prevention measures to minimise the environmental impact.

Over the weekend, the Port Authority has been coordinating the emergency response with the local councils concerned, the Harbour Master’s Office, the Pilots’ Association and the other agencies involved. In this context, initial work has been carried out to clear debris and clean up the area.

At present, the operational focus is on the technical tasks involved in refloating the wreck, as well as on the collection, sorting and management of the waste generated, with the aim of ensuring port safety and protecting the marine environment.

Work is continuing under the direct supervision of the APB, which is keeping its monitoring and surveillance systems in place until the affected area has fully returned to normal. It is expected that refloating operations will be able to take place by the end of the week, weather permitting.

Coordinated action from the outset, with the Port Police and the harbour pilots playing a key role in the initial rescue efforts, has prevented any injuries and limited the scale of the incident.

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands reaffirms its commitment to port safety and environmental protection, and expresses its gratitude for the cooperation between all the authorities involved in providing an effective and rapid response to emergencies in the maritime and port sectors.

The port of Ibiza is planning cruise ship calls for 2026 to ensure mobility and service quality

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) has put the finishing touches to the plan for tourist cruise ship calls at the port of Ibiza for 2026 with the aim of ensuring orderly operations, preserving mobility in the port environment and offering a quality service to passengers visiting the island.

The planned schedule includes 205 cruise ship calls throughout the year, organised according to the planning criteria established by the APB to make this traffic compatible with the rest of the port activity.

Docking planning is carried out following the procedure that regulates the scheduling of regular line ships and tourist cruises. In the port of Ibiza, cruise traffic is concentrated in the berths enabled in the Botafoc area, which include the pontoons and the Botafoc sea wall dock, and in the adjacent dock. The rest of the port's docks are intended for regular coastal shipping lines that connect the island with other ports in the archipelago and the peninsula.

Stagger arrivals to avoid overcrowding

One of the main planning criteria is to stagger the arrival of ships to avoid clashes with the embarkation and disembarkation operations of regular lines and to ensure a smooth flow of passengers in the terminal. For this reason, cruise ships enter the port from 11:30 a.m. onwards, with previously authorised exceptions.

Furthermore, the schedule takes into account the rate of passenger disembarkation so that it does not exceed 3,000 passengers per hour, a threshold that allows for adequate mobility in the terminal and avoids overloading associated transport systems, such as the port bus, the urban bus or the taxi service.

Cruise ships may occasionally coincide

The plan envisages that, on most days, the port will receive one or two cruise ships, while the simultaneous presence of three ships is limited to specific days and is managed through the time distribution of arrivals and the use of different berths.

In exceptional cases, a larger number of ships may coincide when one of them is smaller or makes stops with different schedules, which allows an operational balance to be maintained and avoids peaks in passenger accumulation.

Planning for an activity compatible with the city

With this planning system, the Balearic Islands Port Authority seeks to reconcile cruise traffic activity with the operation of the port and the city’s mobility, guaranteeing an orderly management of port calls and a satisfactory experience for visitors arriving in Ibiza by sea.

The schedule may be adjusted throughout the year depending on operational needs or changes in shipping lines' schedules, always maintaining the safety, efficiency and quality of service criteria that govern the port's activity.
