The port of Mahón shapes its future with 328 proposals made by the general public

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) has presented the results of the participatory process for the transformation of the South Bank of the port of Mahón, a key initiative as part of the strategy Mahón Port, Horizon 2030 that is committed to integrated, sustainable and people-centred development.

 

The process has had a high level of involvement of the general public, with a total of 120 unique participants and 328 proposals collected, of which 99.4% were considered useful and classifiable. Participation was channelled both through the digital platform portmaohoritzo2030.com such as mediating face-to-face workshops, thus combining accessibility and depth in the debate.

 

This process allowed us to gather input from very diverse profiles, including the general public, the economic and commercial fabric, social and environmental entities, port users and technical professionals, guaranteeing a plural and representative vision.

 

A more balanced and integrated port model

The conclusions of the participatory process shape a port model based on the balance between four major areas: economic activity and quality of life, port operation and relationship with the city, mobility and safety, and identity and future development.

 

Among the main demands we collected are the need to calm traffic and improve mobility, promote a port active throughout the year with a diversified economy, preserve the identity and heritage of the waterfront, and guarantee a healthier, more accessible and sustainable public space.

 

Clear constraints for the future project

Citizen contributions will be translated into concrete criteria that will be incorporated into the technical specifications of the competition for the drafting of the construction project. Among these conditions, the following stand out:

 

-The reorganisation of mobility prioritising pedestrians and speed limits. 

-Improving connectivity between the port and the city, with new access points and more efficient parking management. 

-The creation of a vibrant space throughout the year, with economic activity compatible with daily life. 

-The commitment to environmental sustainability, with more green areas, shade and measures to protect the marine environment. 

-Respect for the historical and landscape identity of the port. 

 

Open governance and continuity of the process

The APB has reiterated its commitment to open governance, based on transparency, institutional coordination and continued public participation during the next phases of the project.

 

The roadmap planned from now on includes the preparation of the tender documents, the bidding and awarding of the construction project and the development of the winning proposal.

 

With this initiative, the APB consolidates the South Bank of the port of  Mahón as an opportunity to strengthen the link between port and city, moving towards a more sustainable, inclusive model rooted in the community.

The APB places sport at the heart of the new tender to manage a boating facility in the port of Ibiza

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) passed a resolution, in its last meeting held yesterday in Palma, to approve the specifications and clauses that will govern the public tender for the management, under concession, of the port bus in the port of Ibiza. The maximum term of the concession will be 25 years.

 

The new management model places the promotion of sporting activity at the heart of the project, with special attention to activities such as sailing and canoeing, reinforcing the role of the port as a space open to the public, grassroots sport and federated competition.

 

A decisive boost to marine sports

The tender establishes as an essential requirement the implementation and development of sailing and canoeing schools, as well as the creation of federated competition teams in both. In addition, the future concession holder will have to organise sporting and recreational events, including official competitions, and implement a system of financial support to athletes along with its corresponding logistical support.

 

In addition, training activities of a sporting, social, cultural and environmental nature will be promoted, consolidating the facility as a dynamic space for integration between the port and the city. 

 

Services and conditions geared towards quality and sustainability

The concession holder company must guarantee the provision of essential services such as mooring management, catering, water and power supply - including electric charging points in at least 4% of the moorings - boat repair, parking and dry dock.

 

The facility will be geared towards vessels based in the port of Ibiza, although up to 15% of the moorings will be allowed to be allocated to stopover vessels. Additionally, a public registry of applications to access base moorings will be enabled, guaranteeing the transparency of the process.

 

Investment in modernisation and efficiency

The project includes an investment structured in two phases to ensure the modernisation of the facility and the legal certainty of the process.

 

The first phase, with an estimated investment of 15 million euros and execution in the first two years, will include the reorganisation of the water surface, the construction of a new breakwater and the remodeling of existing buildings.

 

The second phase, with an estimated additional investment of 5 million euros, will be conditional upon the approval of the Special Plan for the port of Ibiza and will allow the expansion and development of existing buildings.

 

Extension of the current authorisation

Furthermore, the Board of Directors of the APB has approved the extension of the current authorisation, granted to the company Puertos y Litorales Sostenibles, for the management of this same marine facility.

 

This extension will remain in effect until the selection of the best bid in the public tender, and at most until 31 December 2026. The aim is to guarantee the continuity of service and the operability of the facility during the tender process.

 

With this initiative, the APB reinforces its commitment to a more sustainable, open port model focused on promoting sports, consolidating the port of Ibiza as a leader in promoting marine activity and the social and economic development of the surrounding area.

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) has brought forward the planned schedule by one day and started the manoeuvres today to refloat the yacht sunk at the entrance to the port of Ibiza. This operation allowed the vessel, which is currently located approximately ten metres below sea level, to be moved to the jetty of the Botafoc dock.

 

The operation, coordinated by the APB, thus enters a decisive phase. Tomorrow the yacht is scheduled to be lifted, that is, the manoeuvre to raise the vessel out of the water and place it on dry land. This action will allow the waste treatment tasks and de-ballasting work to begin later.

 

The president of the APB, Javier Sanz, and the director, Toni Ginard, travelled today to the Botafoc dock to follow the works on site, together with the Ibiza harbourmaster, Luis Gascón.

 

Operation carried out today

During the day, one vessel towed the wreck to the dock, while another followed the route with an absorbent barrier to collect any liquid and solid waste and debris.

 

Once in port, new perimeter containment barriers were deployed, consisting of a double absorbent and floating barrier system with the aim of ensuring maximum protection of the marine environment during the following phases of the operation.

 

Cleaning and contaminant removal tasks

Along with the refloating manoeuvres, specialist teams continue with the tasks of cleaning up the vessel. Since Monday, divers have extracted a total of 900 litres of polluting liquids from inside the yacht.

 

In addition, 900 kg of solid waste were removed in previous days. This amount is in addition to the work carried out today, in which three additional sacks, each weighing 250 kg, were extracted. In total, 1,650 kg of solid waste have been recovered, significantly reducing the risk of pollution.

 

All recovered waste will be transferred to an authorised treatment plant for proper disposal.

 

Once the lifting operation and the dry-docking of the vessel are completed, an investigation and technical assessment phase will begin, lasting approximately one week, with the aim of clarifying the causes of the incident.

 

The APB is keeping the entire control and monitoring system activated, with the aim of ensuring a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly operation, in a highly complex technical operation that continues to go ahead as planned.
