THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPERLY HANDLING SHIP-GENERATED WASTE AND CARGO RESIDUES IN PORT

The PORT AUTHORITY OF THE BALEARIC ISLANDS in compliance with current regulations (R.D. 128/2022) has updated its “Ship waste reception and handling plan” for the ports of Palma, Alcúdia, Mahón, Ibiza, and La Savina, which is now available to all users.

As part of the overall environmental protection policy, reducing ship-generated waste discharged into the sea is a priority objective to protect the marine environment. The requirements laid down in the "Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships", Marpol Convention 73/78, in its latest edition, among others, have been adopted.

The sea has long been regarded as the recipient of waste generated by human activity, both on land and at sea. Cumulative effects over time, as well as the increase in waste, both in quantity and detrimental impact, are exhausting seas and oceans' capacity to regenerate biologically.

Marine pollution through human activities at sea causes disturbances in the ocean ecosystem, such that the effects are returning to humans in the form of food poisoning, coastal disruption, etc.
