The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) launched the new phase of Palma's seafront promenade today with a visit from the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, who toured the new space accompanied by the president of the APB, Javier Sanz, and other local and regional authorities. The event included the opening of the exhibition “A Walk along the Seafront”, marking the completion of a major transformation that redefines the connection between the port and the city. The renovation has created a greener, more accessible and sustainable space, designed for public enjoyment and active mobility.
This APB project involved an investment of over €50 million and the transformation of 3.5 kilometres of seafront. The new promenade gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists, expands green areas and promotes sustainable mobility, reducing the prominence of road traffic.
During his visit, the president of the APB highlighted the participatory process involved in the project, ‘in which we have been very careful to introduce and take into account the sensitivities of business owners, shopkeepers and residents in the area’. Meanwhile, Minister Puente stressed that “Palma now has a port area that is fully integrated into the city, designed for people, leisure and sustainability”.
Over the three years of construction, more than 2,300 new trees have been planted, 37,000 m² of landscaped areas have been created and large areas have been set aside for pedestrians, cyclists and recreational spaces. The project has incorporated sustainable drainage systems, smart LED lighting and charging points for electric vehicles.
“A stroll along the seafront”: the story of a transformation
The day included the opening of the exhibition “A stroll along the seafront”, which provides a historical overview of how the promenade has evolved from its origins to the present day. The exhibition explains how this road was created in response to a strategic need: to connect the Old quay with the recently built West dock and the new Paraires and Poniente quays, facilitating the port connection and the growth of the port of Palma.
Visitors can learn how the first construction project was drawn up in 1944, which resulted in a port service road that was opened for public use shortly afterwards. Over the decades, the promenade evolved and adapted to the urban development of the city, with successive extensions and improvements, such as its widening to two lanes to absorb the growing road traffic.
The exhibition devotes a prominent space to the latest major redevelopment, begun in 2022 and completed this year, which has profoundly transformed its physiognomy and urban function. This new promenade gives people a new protagonism, integrates the port into the life of the city and converts the seafront into a space for meeting and conviviality.
“A stroll along the seafront” can be visited at the Port Centre in the port of Palma (entrance on Camino de la Escollera) from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00, until 23 December.
Charity and sports weekend
The APB is holding the first Port Authority of the Balearic Islands Charity Run to celebrate this transformation of Palma's seafront. It will take place on 15 and 16 November, and all proceeds from registration fees will go to Projecte Home Balears.
The event will begin on Saturday with a fair featuring sports and social organisations in the Plaza de Sant Domingo de la Calzada, along with free activities for all ages. On Sunday 16th, starting at 10:00 am, the 10 km race will begin, which will pass through port areas that are usually closed to the public for the first time. This will be followed by children's races, another 4 km race and a 4 km walk for the general public.
Registrations are available through the EliteChip website. Race bibs and race T-shirt must be collected on Saturday.
This initiative seeks to promote physical activity, solidarity and sustainability, with drinking water stations to reduce the use of plastics. The event is part of the APB's strategy to bring the port closer to the public, promoting greater port-city integration and fostering coexistence between port and maritime activity and public use.
