This public body is in the process of updating the "Strategic Plan of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands", which covers the five ports of general interest (Palma, Alcúdia, Maó, Eivissa and La Savina) and maritime signals that it manages (34 lighthouses and more than 25 coastal beacons), with a 5-10 year time horizon.
We are talking about infrastructures where vital services are provided for maritime connections and the supply of the islands, and where important tourist and socio-economic activities are also developed, linked to sectors such as cruises or recreational sailing, including repair and maintenance or, on a smaller scale, fishing.
The objective of this Plan is to define the future strategies for these ports, reconciling the different points of view of our society, which they currently serve and must continue to do so in the future. This leads us to consider all the key factors that may have an impact, such as economic, environmental, social, technological, etc., in order to serve the general interest at all times.
In short, we want to focus on improving the quality and efficiency of the services provided in the ports, maintaining the current self-financing capacity, and respecting our valuable environment (natural and urban), with sufficient foresight to successfully face the challenges of the near future.
After Phase I of the work, the results and conclusions of the preliminary analysis and diagnosis were presented to the major stakeholders on each of the islands in a series of documents. In addition to the numerous interviews and meetings held with the port community, an electronic communication channel was created, using the web and social networks for its dissemination, making it possible to report on the progress of the work and receive contributions from any interested party.
With the debate and contributions received, Phase II of the Plan itself was drawn up in 2021, through the formulation and deployment of the Strategy of the APB and of each of its ports (and maritime signals).
So that the different opinions, sensitivities, suggestions and approaches can continue to be heard, we make this document on the formulation and deployment of the Strategy available to the public, facilitating their continuous interaction, in order to improve the final version of this Plan.
The Strategic Plan is currently being updated for two reasons: On the one hand, to align it with the new "Strategic Framework of the port system of general interest" approved by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda in October 2022 and, on the other hand, to incorporate the important changes that have occurred in society in recent years, including the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
