The renovation of Palma's seafront promenade receives the 2026 City and Landscape Opinion Award

The renovation of Palma's seafront promenade, carried out by the Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB), has been awarded the 2026 City and Landscape Opinion Award. This is an award given within the framework of the FAD Architecture and Interior Design Awards, one of the most prestigious competitions in the architectural and urban planning field in Spain and Portugal.
The award recognises the profound transformation of Palma's seafront, an initiative that managed to reclaim public space for people, improved the integration between the port and the city, and progress towards a more sustainable and accessible mobility model. The project was developed by the team of architects José Antonio Martínez Lapeña, Elías Torres Tur and Jordi Pradas Brun, with the engineering of TYPSA and under the sponsorship of the APB.
In its assessment, the jury highlighted the quality of the project as an example of the recovery of public space on an urban waterfront traditionally occupied by road traffic. It also highlighted the multidisciplinary collaboration between architecture, urban planning, landscaping and engineering, as well as the attention paid to pedestrians, connectivity, vegetation, lighting and the quality of urban design.
The jury also highlighted that the project promotes pedestrian and bicycle mobility, encourages the use of public transport, and creates new spaces for citizens to go to, get together and enjoy. Furthermore, it has highlighted its social and ecological objectives, aligned with European strategies for emissions reduction, climate adaptation and universal accessibility.
The remodelling of the seafront promenade constitutes one of the most important urban projects promoted by the APB in recent decades. The intervention has transformed a 3.5-kilometre axis into a large green corridor, with new pedestrian spaces, cycle lanes, landscaped areas and a renewed relationship between the city and the sea.
For the APB, this recognition represents an endorsement of the open port model integrated into the city that the institution promotes and confirms the value of the investments aimed at improving the urban, environmental and landscape quality of port environments.
